I have also wondered this and I initially thought that a more appropriate or PC term would be “crossdresser” or something akin to that, but then someone from that lifestyle explained to me that drag queening is entertainment and showmanship, and “drag” or “drag queen” is simply a term describing people who are in that line of show biz.
